Liqiu—The Beginning of Autumn
Liqiu is the 13th solar term in China’s 24 Solar Terms, marking the beginning of autumn. Although the arrival of Liqiu doesn’t
mean an immediate cooling of temperatures, it signals the end of the hot summer and the forthcoming crisp autumn days.
On the day of Liqiu, various regions in China have different traditional customs, such as "Tiepian Biao" (gaining weight for autumn),
"Yaqiu Gua" (biting autumn melons), and "Yingqiu" (welcoming autumn). "Tiepian Biao" involves eating meat to replenish the energy
lost during the summer, while "Yaqiu Gua" refers to eating melons to stay healthy.
During Liqiu, people’s diet gradually shifts towards nourishment and moisture retention. Traditionally, on Liqiu, people eat foods
that nourish the yin and lungs, such as duck, lotus root, and white fungus. Additionally, in many regions, people drink "Liqiu porridge"
to strengthen the spleen and stomach.
After Liqiu, temperatures gradually decrease, and the day-night temperature difference increases. Traditional Chinese medicine advises that
during this time, people should pay attention to body conditioning, moderately increase fat intake, keep warm, and maintain good sleep habits.
